Spent a wonderful weekend in SE Utah with the staff of Canyonlands Field Institute. http://www.canyonlandsfieldinst.org/
There were many highlights of the trip, but what really made the trip was our guest guide and longtime resident of Bluff, Utah- Gene Foushee. Gene has spent a lifetime exploring the vast country around Bluff, UT. Not only did Gene build the infamous Recapture Lodge www.recapturelodge.com
but is an accomplished pilot, father, and of course...amazing naturalist.
Along for the trip was two fellow teachers from SHMS, Mr. Shaw and Ms. Kirkman. I also invited my father along to share the experience. Two beautiful ladies from Pennsylvania-Shirley and Helen (Shirley had spent some time here in Bluff with Gene when she was a student years ago) as well as our C.F.I. guides Karla and Trina.
Our first stop was the Edge of the Cedars Museum in Blanding, Utah. http://www.utah.com/stateparks/edge_of_cedars.htm
Edge of the Cedars houses an impressive collection of artifacts, complete with pots, baskets, shoes, tools, and weapons from all eras. All of the pieces of the collection have come from the 4 corners region.
After the Edge of the Cedars visit, we made our way to Mule Canyon where were oogled over 900+ year old pottery found all around the ruins at the mouth of the canyon.
We followed along the Comb Wash dirt road into Bluff, stopping at some petroglyph locations along the way. Once we arrived in Bluff and checked in at the Recapture Lodge, we were invited to Gene and Mary Foushee's for an introduction and to get acquainted.
The next day we ventured out in CFI vehicles up the Moki Dugway and on to the Cedar Mesa.
The Edge of the Cedars is in danger of being closed by our legislature!!
Here are some photos I took while out in the field with Gene...Thanks for looking
